To make 1.5 degrees possible, we need a balance between anthropogenic emissions and removals, a state known as net-zero. We need to adapt various instruments to achieve this state, and Coral Future can help you.
Net-zero is a state of balance between the released GHG emissions and an equivalent amount of GHG emissions removed through carbon removal.
While it is practically not possible to eliminate all the emissions due to technical and economic constraints, it is possible to achieve a balance that results in no net increase of GHG emissions. Hence, achieving Net-Zero means that the GHG emissions have been reduced or eliminated as near as possible to zero, and the unabated emissions have been neutralized with the help of carbon removal measures.
Net-Zero Carbon: An energy-efficient building that runs on energy sourced through on-site or ex-situ renewable sources is known as a Net-Zero Carbon building. This accounts for the carbon emissions involved during construction and operation phases that are reduced and/or compensated equal to zero.
Net-Zero Energy: A Net-Zero Energy state is attained when the clean energy produced on-site or nearby is equivalent to the total energy required/used.
Net-Zero Emissions: Achieving Net-Zero emissions means that the released anthropogenic GHG emissions are balanced by removing an equal amount of GHG emissions from the atmosphere.
Net-Zero’s journey begins with companies setting their near-term and long-term targets in line with the 1.5°C pathway. Near-term targets could just focus on ‘low-carbon’ strategies such as energy efficiency, renewable energy and life cycle assessments. Long- term strategies could be as per SBTi’s Net-Zero Global Standard.
Emissions can be reduced by capturing, recovering and/or reprocessing. Some of the ways are:
